Chi-Town Showdown!
Date: Sunday, July 18

Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL, was the scene on the weekend of July 15-18, 2010 for the Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing – an awesome display of hundreds of doorslammers of all domestic makes and models in the NMRA and NMCA’s racing classes.

In the Turbonetics Pro Outlaw 10.5 class, Mike Murillo turned in a stout 6.79 at nearly 216 MPH to lead the field into the eliminations sessions. There, it would come down to Conrad Scarry and Murillo in the final round in a repeat of the last event at Milan Dragway. When the tree came down, Murillo blasted off to an awesome 6.84 to Scarry’s 7.17 for the win, ending Scarry’s unbeaten streak. Murillo hammered the tree with a .006 reaction time to win over Joe Dunne and clinch the Super Bowl victory for the NMRA!

John Macdonald let everything hang out during the ProCharger Super Street Outlaw qualifying sessions to qualify in the top spot with a 7.34 blast. John Urist ended Macdonald’s weekend in the semifinals, moving on to face nemesis Sammy Vincent in the final round. There, Vincent uncorked a killer 7.35 at nearly 192 MPH to put Urist on the trailer and claim his first win of the season. In his SB run against Mike Yedgarian, he unwrapped an unreal 191 MPH, 7.30 blast for the win.

The DiabloSport EFI Renegade class came down to the man who could survive the longest. After qualifying number one, Bob Cook rode his momentum to the final round to face off against first-time finalist Chad Allmandinger. Cook then ran it out the back door with a consistent 8.59 at over 161 MPH to take the win in the final round. Cook was then overtaken at the stripe by Kevin Parent in their matchup.

It took all season, but someone finally dethroned Jason Lee. During BFGoodrich Tire Drag Radial qualifying, Sean Lyon turned in an 8.04 in the heat to sit atop the ladder. Once eliminations started, Lyon ran his machine all the way to the finals against ’09 Champion Lee. A side-by-side battle and 8.00 elapsed time put the win light on in Lyon’s favor with a .006 margin-of-victory as he took his first NMRA win of the season. Bill Trovato then took a holeshot victory from him in the Bowl.

Robbie Blankenship’s 8.59 led the naturally-aspirated Edelbrock Hot Street contingent into the elimination sessions. Blankenship then defeated teammate Don Bowles Sr. on a holeshot to meet up with first-time finalist Rick Riccardi. In the finals, Blankenship let it all hang out to take the win with a 16-thousandths MOV. He matched up with Don Baskin in the Super Bowl and took the win.

Saturday's Pit Notes
Date: Sunday, July 18

Over the last several years, ProCharger Super Street Outlaw has been the John Urist show, but this season is anyone’s game. Willing and able to step up to the plate is the Bradenton winner and this weekend’s #1 qualifier, John Macdonald. Macdonald and crew chief Kim Mapes of Motorcity Motorsports have been working nonstop on their supercharged combination and it’s been paying off in spades. Macdonald told us yesterday that the testing regimen that is necessary to succeed in Super Street Outlaw was the hardest thing for him to figure out, as it’s taken the team two years to feel like they are having a measure of success. Will he be able to take home his first Super Bowl title tonight? Only time will tell…

After an offseason of hard work, Chad Allmandinger and crew chief/brother Travis finally made it back to the DiabloSport EFI Renegade class this weekend. Chad’s Bischoff Engine Service-powered multicolored machine was on the ball during yesterday’s eliminations. He faced off against #2 qualifier Chris Van Gilder and strapped a stout holeshot on him to take the win, moving him on directly to the finals, where he will face off against 2008 class champion Bob Cook.

The BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial class is one of the most difficult classes to master in all of drag racing, and Steve Thompson and his gorgeous nitrous-powered rocket are getting a handle on it. Although nitrous has been in the background over the last several years as the turbocharged and supercharged machines have dominated, Thompson is looking to change that. Yesterday, he did so in a big way, running the quickest nitrous pass ever in the process of defeating Enzo Pecchini. An 8.05 at over 171 MPH is only the beginning, as Thompson and crew chief Scott Anderson feel there is more left in the car. He faces Adam Jude today in the second round of eliminations.

Brandon Alsept won the Eibach Springs Pure Street title in 2008, but struggled last year with a new Two-Valve Modular combination. It looks like the bugs are finally worked out, as he came out yesterday in the first round of eliminations with an incredible 10.18 at over 132 MPH, nearly three-tenths quicker than any other ra . . .

Friday Pit Notes
Date: Saturday, July 17

August Race Pages cover boy Jim Brown is here this weekend competing in Turbonetics Pro Outlaw 10.5 with his Jeff Prock-tuned, BES Engines-built big-block entry. So far, Brown is sneaking up on the tune, having only activated two of the three nitrous kits. He will have his work cut out for him against the likes of Conrad Scarry and Mike Murillo once eliminations roll around tonight.

We first met Daniel Pachar and the Triangle Speed Shop boys back at the season-opening Bradenton event. There, the team struggled with their ProCharger Super Street Outlaw entry, running into some growing pains that eliminated them from competition. They run a 281 cubic inch Modular combination boosted with 35+ pounds of ProCharger F2. They, like Brown, are sneaking up on the combination, as they are one of only a few racers in the country brave enough to try to make the tiny Mod engine work in a class like this.

DiabloSport EFI Renegade racer George Seeger hasn’t been competing much over the last two years, but he is here this weekend to drive Alton Clements’ championship-winning racecar. Unfortunately, after the test-and-tune session Friday morning, Seeger had a dead cylinder. After pulling the engine apart, he and car owner Alton Clements Sr. realized that it was not repairable at the track, and were getting ready to load the car back into the trailer. This opens up the competition in Renegade to the highest bidder, with Brian Mitchell, Chad Allmandinger, Chris Van Gilder, and others vying for the Super Bowl win.

After his first-round qualifier shot, JDM Engineering Super Stang racer and Brenspeed proprietor Brent White came back to the pits with a nasty noise in the rearend of his Saleen. Without hesitation, DynoJoe Cram hopped underneath the car to help White diagnose the isssie. After the disassembly process was complete, a broken rearend carrier told the tale. White does not anticipate any issues repairing it, and will be ready to go for eliminations.

It is awesome to see the return of Super Street Outlaw racer Travis Franklin. As Travis hasn’t competed in a few years, he had to com . . .
